Joe Friedt, CFP, CLU
Senior Insurance and Estate Advisor
“Apparently I was seven when I told my mom I was going to help people save money.”
Joe doesn’t actually remember saying that, but today laughs about how very true his childhood prediction became – with 28 years as an estate and financial planner now under his belt.
Born in Edmonton, Joe and his mom later settled in British Columbia. He had a strong academic focus as he attended Vancouver College, but grew torn between two industries: finance and music.
“I always joke that Reba McEntire opened up for me. She took the main stage at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival – where I assisted in emcee’ing for many years – and I would come up on stage between artists to perform, as an artist myself, to the crowds of tens of thousands. The best part was when they joined in song with me. Singing in front of people is a big passion of mine, but ultimately I decided to go down the path of lifestyle financial planning because I want to help people.”
It’s what makes him a perfect fit at Dream Harbour. Joe – who went on to achieve his Bachelor of Economics from UBC – explains that Dream Harbour’s brand foundation puts perfectly everything he could hope to say about the kind of advisor-client relationship he strives for. Although, he would add a rather athletic component to the mix:
“Sometimes I say I’m like the quarterback of financial planning. Whatever it is my clients want to accomplish – whatever passes they want to make – we make sure there’s no incompletions.”
Joe’s experience is that the number one thing people want to know is whether or not they’re going to be okay. So he doesn’t shy away when clients throw him the tough questions, like “Am I going to leave a mess behind if something happens to me?” Instead, he tackles these worries head-on and with compassion.
“What I love about Dream Harbour’s mission statement – We meet you where you are in life, and take you where you want to go – is that it plans with the client, not the product, first in mind. That’s what I do. I work with my clients to uncover what’s important, and I use that to give them clarity on their financial future. I make sure they’re looking forward to their future not with apprehension, but with great anticipation.”
